Ny Rocking Chair

July 3, 2008

Design Within Reach carries the Ny Rocking Chair and Ottoman  which was designed by Takeshi Nii in 1958, after he was inspired by an ad for a director’s chair in an archival magazine from the 1930s. At only 14.5 lbs, the Ny folds into a compact 5.5″ form that can stand on its own discreetly in the corner, or be easily picked up and moved wherever an extra lounge chair needed.

Ship Wood Bench

July 3, 2008

This bench at VivaTerra, is “hand-wrought from a no-longer sailing vessel. With a patina that radiates softly like thick layers of satin, while its aged density and strength give it a nobility all its own.”

Hello Stranger

June 27, 2008

Hello Stranger’s concave form encourages sociability but leaves open the option to sit apart. Used in multiples, Hello Stranger can be used to create interesting layouts that encourage different forms of interaction. Hello Stranger consists of a tough stainless steel frame together with a seat insert available in a variety of materials, from hardwoods to metals and plastics.

I don’t think this necessarily looks the most comfortable, but I like look and the fact that it folds.

Reminiscent of a steamer deck chair, our folding barrel stave chair is made from salvaged 70-gallon oak wine barrels. When folded, the slats nest alongside one another, making the chair as flat as a comma. Individually numbered with the name of the winery branded under the seat. For those who don’t like to be alone, there’s also a bench variety.

Folded Bed

June 18, 2008

Slim and modern the bed sits low to the ground to minimize its presence. Both sides of the headboard diverge into symmetrical end tables that include semi translucent plastic panels. Each panel allows for rear lighting, perfect for reading in bed.

Conseta Furniture

June 16, 2008

The Conseta sofabed unfolds on telescopic runners to become a roomy double bed complete with a spacious linen box, base, mattress and pillows. Click on the link to see an animation of the bed opening and closing.

Conseta also has a low table, however, my need for hidden storage stops me from buying anything like this, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate it.

Kaja Sofa

June 13, 2008

The arm and back rests of the Kaja Sofa can be adjusted almost infinitely from the vertical to the horizontal. Cushions can be repositioned at will, and stools become tables. This is the new seating concept from COR. Virtually countless configurations can be planned using just six sofa elements and two stools.

HOB

June 12, 2008

A flexible bentwood shell in the seat and back replaces the upholstery and provides the necessary comfort. As if made in a single casting and covered with high quality felt or robust bend leather, HOB seems to float gently above the ground. Contributing to this appearance is the delicate, rotating aluminium frame, available in polished version or in various lacquers.

Table=Chest

I love the multifunctionality of this chest/table

Table=Chest

Old distressed wood carpentered to a reliably useful and comforting balance. A bit like us: life inherently distresses us, we try to work it out to an eventual peaceful balance. Maybe reminders like the table will hasten the peace.
